History

The Hoosesaggmuseeum has been around since 1995 and was actually created purely by chance. We live on an exposed little street that is visited by many tourists every day. Time and again, the guided tours would stop in front of our house "zum großen Christoffel" and take a look at the façade. After all, according to legend, the first midwife in the city of Basel lived here. A view of St. Christoffel with the baby Jesus on the façade was supposed to protect the midwife from sudden death and in order to be allowed to give birth at all, she had to obtain permission from the three wise men in the town hall each time.
But there were also many people who just wanted to press their noses against our front door to get a glimpse inside. That bothered us. So we thought: should a curtain block the view, or a frosted pane of glass? No, we would turn the 'door-window' into a "window store", i.e. a mini-shop where small items could be offered for sale and bought. But people didn't have the courage to ring the doorbell to buy one of the items displayed in the window. So we started to present our smaller and larger collections in this small shop window. With ever greater success, because suddenly passers-by were ringing the bell, wanting to see even more of the museum, or even to exhibit themselves. In the meantime, Basel Tourism is keeping a close eye on us and a group stops at almost every guided tour to admire and enjoy the window.
